Olive seeds that were part of space mutation experiments aboard the Shenzhou XIV spacecraft in 2022 have successfully germinated in Longnan, Gansu province, Northwest China, as reported by China Central Television.

Researchers intend to move the olive seedlings grown from 315 grams of these seeds outdoors by 2026 to aid their adaptation to natural conditions.

Space mutation experiments are designed to expose plant seeds or tissues to unique extraterrestrial factors, such as microgravity, high radiation, and temperature extremes, encouraging genetic mutations.

These experiments aim to develop superior olive germplasm with favorable characteristics, including higher yields, better quality, early maturity, and enhanced disease resistance.

Longnan is known as a prime region for olive cultivation. By the end of 2023, it hosted over 1.04 million mu (approximately 69,333 hectares) of olive trees, producing 54,000 tonnes of fresh olives, generating a total value of about 4 billion yuan (around $556 million).
