Paris river Seine over Olympics pollution limit: analysis
Paris river Seine over Olympics pollution limit: analysis

Paris (AFP) June 21, 2024

Paris' river Seine was too dirty when tested on June 16 to allow the Olympic triathlon and open-water swimming events to be held there, an analysis showed Friday.

"Samples from the Seine do not meet the standards we will have this summer" for the river when the Olympic Games are held from July 26 to August 11, Paris region prefect Marc Guillaume said.

A weekly report published by the Paris region and mayor's office blamed unseasonal rainy weather for the high rates of two kinds of faecal bacteria including E. Coli in the waterway.

"Water quality remains degraded due to... rain, high flow, little sunshine (and) temperatures below seasonal norms," it said.

Results posted online showed concentration of E. Coli was higher than the recommended limit in four locations of the river for practically all of the week of June 10 to 16.

The Seine is supposed to host both the Olympics opening ceremony as well as open-water events during the Games.

But Paris has been holding its breath hoping for the river to be clean enough.

In August last year, the swimming marathon test events were cancelled because the water was too dirty, as were the swimming legs on two of the four days of triathlon and para-triathlon tests.

If the river is too polluted when the Olympics kick off, the plan B is to postpone open-water swimming events for a few days -- not to move them to a new location.

Malaysia beaches hit by Singapore oil spill
Kuala Lumpur (AFP) June 21, 2024 - An oil spill off Singapore has spread to beaches in southern Malaysia, a government official said Friday, with clean-up operations underway.

Around 25 people were involved in the clean-up of two beaches spanning one kilometre (0.6 miles) in southern Johor state, local government official Ling Tian Soon told AFP.

"Work began today and we hope to complete the task tomorrow. From our observation, marine life or fishermen activities have not been affected," he said.

The oil spill resulted from an accident on Friday at Singapore's Pasir Panjang terminal between a Netherlands-flagged dredger and a stationary Singapore-flagged bunker vessel, Singapore's Maritime and Port Authority (MPA) said.

Photos posted on Ling's Facebook showed men in white protective gear picking up black sludge from a beach and placing it into plastic bags.

Ling added that Malaysia's maritime officials were monitoring to see if the oil spill spreads to other parts of the coast.

Air pollution linked to nearly 2,000 child deaths a day: report
Paris (AFP) June 19, 2024
Nearly 2,000 children die every day from health problems linked to air pollution, which is now the second biggest risk factor for early death worldwide, a report said Wednesday. Exposure to air pollution contributed to the deaths of 8.1 million people - around 12 percent of all fatalities - in 2021, according to the report from the US-based Health Effects Institute. This means air pollution has overtaken tobacco use and poor diet to become the second leading risk factor for early death, behind ... read more
