The US military said on Tuesday it has opened an investigation into how cash went missing during the dramatic rescue of a US merchant captain taken hostage by Somali pirates.

The Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS) "is investigating allegations that funds went missing on board the Maersk Alabama," US Navy spokesman Commander Cappy Surette told AFP.

He declined to offer more details of the probe saying it would be "inappropriate" to discuss the case with an investigation underway.

US special forces in April rescued the captain of the merchant ship, Richard Phillips, after killing three Somali pirates holding him hostage, ending a five-day stand-off that captured international attention.

The pirates had earlier attempted to take control of the US-flagged ship but retreated to a lifeboat with the captain.

One surviving alleged pirate, Abduwali Muse, has been brought to the United States to face charges of piracy, hijacking and kidnapping.

Prosecutors allege Muse demanded money from the ship's captain and led him by gun point to the ship's safe, where the captain took out about 30,000 dollars, CNN television reported.

But what happened to the money remains a mystery as there is no official account of cash being recovered from the dead pirates or from Muse.

Navy snipers hidden in the rear of the USS Bainbridge, one of two navy warships that rushed to the scene, shot and killed the pirates after President Barack Obama approved military action to resolve the hostage drama.

Manama (AFP) June 2, 2009
British frigate HMS Portland intercepted two suspicious skiffs in the Gulf of Aden on Tuesday and troops boarded them, preventing a possible pirate attack, the US Navy said. The boarding party "found articles that indicated the skiff had been involved or was about to conduct an act of piracy, and were clearly not those of an innocent fishing vessel," the Bahrain-based US Fifth Fleet said. ... read more
