Strong earthquake shakes northern Peru: US

by Staff Writers
Washington (AFP) March 26, 2009
A 5.8-magnitude earthquake shook northern Peru Thursday, the US Geological Survey said.

The quake hit at 12:35 pm (1735 GMT) 87 kilometers (54 miles) southwest of the northern Peruvian city of Piura.

The epicenter was 15 kilometers (nine miles) below the surface, the agency said.

The USGS revised down its earlier estimate of a stronger 6.0 magnitude quake, changing slightly the location and depth of the quake epicenter.
