Swine Flu In All 50 Us States As Cases Top 10,000

Mexico could lift swine flu alert mid-June: minister
Mexico could lift its swine flu alert by mid-June, the health minister said Monday, maintaining the death toll at 97 and raising the number of cases by more than 200 to 5,240. The virus was still on the wane, Jose Angel Cordova said, underlining that the alert for A(H1N1) in the country at the epicenter of the virus could lift in two weeks' time. "If we see that cases are appearing only occasionally, then we'll totally lift the alert," Cordova said, though he still recommended the use of face masks in busy public places such as the metro. Mexico was studying some 2,500 suspect cases out of 25,500 tests received, Cordova said, without signalling whether any of those included deaths. In its latest report, the World Health Organization (WHO) said 62 countries had officially reported 17,410 cases of A(H1N1), including 115 deaths.

India confirms two new cases of swine flu
India's government confirmed Monday two new cases of swine flu in southern India, bring the total number of cases in the country to three. "Two people have tested positive for swine flu in Coimbatore city in the southern state of Kerala," an official of the National Institute of Communicable Disease told AFP, speaking on the condition of anonymity. The two arrived from the United States on May 29 and were being treated at a government hospital in an isolation unit, the official said. Their cases were detected when they came to the hospital for a check-up after suffering symptoms of swine flu. "They are being treated and are doing fine," the official said. India confirmed its first swine flu case last month after a 23-year-old man who had flown to Hyderabad from New York tested positive for the virus. Indian authorities have begun screening passengers at the country's international airports in an attempt to detect any cases of swine flu.

The number of swine flu cases in the United States topped 10,000 Monday and the virus spread to all 50 states, as Alaska reported its first (A)H1N1 infection, an official update showed.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported 10,053 probable or confirmed cases of swine flu in the 50 states and the District of Columbia, up from nearly 9,000 on Friday.

The CDC also linked two more deaths to the (A)H1N1 influenza virus, bringing the official death toll for the outbreak to 17, which does not include the first death from the disease reported by California state officials Monday.

The victim, a middle-aged woman with severe respiratory disease, died late last month, according to Los Angeles County Health Officer Jonathan Fielding.

The United States has the most cases of swine flu of any of more than 50 countries around the world where infections with the virus have been reported, although Mexico, where the new strain of influenza was first reported in April, has the highest death toll, at 97.

Bulgaria reports first swine flu case
Bulgaria confirmed on Monday its first case of swine flu in a Bulgarian man who recently returned from the United States.

The man, who arrived from the United States on May 27, is in good condition and has received anti-flu medication while being treated in isolation, the health ministry said in a statement.

Four people who have had contact with him are also being tested for the A(H1N1) virus, which according to the World Health Organisation has hit some 15,500 people in more than 50 countries.

Israel reports two new swine flu cases
Israel's health ministry confirmed two new cases of swine flu on Monday, bringing to 25 the number of people infected in the country.

A 19-year-old man contracted the A(H1N1) virus from a friend recently returned to Israel from the United States, the Ynet website reported.

Another 24-year-old woman was infected by her father, who had also just come back from the US.

Both were quarantined at hospitals in the Tel Aviv area.

A health ministry spokeswoman said that of the 25 known cases, almost all have recovered and returned home, with only a handful still in hospital.

Israel has imposed strict controls at airports and border crossings to monitor travellers returning from Mexico, where the current outbreak of the illness was first reported.

Swine flu hits secondary school in Spain
Two children at a secondary school near Madrid have been diagnosed with swine flu and a further 42 are under observation due to suspicions they have contracted the disease, local authorities said Monday.

The Isaac Albeniz school in the town of Leganes was closed until at least Tuesday following the news, said the regional education official for the Madrid region, Lucia Figar.

Notices about swine flu were also posted in other schools in the town.

The two confirmed cases were a brother and sister, said regional health director Juan Jose Guemes.

He said the girl "travelled to the United States where it seems she contracted the flu before infecting her brother," he said.

Spanish authorities earlier this month quarantined two military establishments after an outbreak in which 20 soldiers were infected.

Spain was the first European country to confirm a case of the A(H1N1) virus, and the World Health Organisation said Monday there now are 178 confirmed cases of the disease in the country.

It said swine flu had infected 17,410 people in 62 countries since it was first reported last month in Mexico and the United States. It said 115 people have died of the virus.
