Stuttgart, Germany (AFP) May 20, 2010 The United States is no longer considering moving the US military' command for Africa (Africom) from Germany to the African continent, a senior US official said Thursday. "We are here indefinitely. Not only are there no plans to relocate, but there are no plans to study the possibility to relocate," said Anthony Holmes, the civilian deputy to the Africom chief, General William Ward. "It's very unlikely, and I believe that if we ever move from Stuttgart, it's likely to go to the United States," he added. "But, of course, the next administration can come in and have a different approach." Africom was created in 2007 and headquartered in the German city of Stuttgart, which is also where the US military's European command is based, after some speculation that Africom could be based in Africa itself. Holmes said that the United States had made initial enquiries about basing the command in Africa, but then opted for Germany amid fears in many African nations that the US was looking to establish a foothold on the continent.
