A single plain cotton T-shirt, the kind that costs a few dollars and lives in a drawer until it becomes a rag, has a water footprint of roughly 2,700 litres. That is about what one person drinks in 900 days at three litres a day. Nearly two and a half years of drinking water, poured into a garment you can buy without thinking.

We treat water as effectively free and endless, so a number this big just slides off. But it is not a rhetorical flourish.

Where the water actually goes

Most of the water is spent before the cotton is even picked. The bulk is the rainwater and irrigation consumed while growing the crop, with smaller amounts counted later for processing and pollution. Cotton can have a large water footprint, and the trouble is where irrigated cotton tends to be grown: often in dry regions where freshwater is already in short supply.

Central Asia shows what that can cost. In a study of cotton’s water use, Chapagain and Hoekstra tie irrigation for the crop to the collapse of the Aral Sea, once one of the largest lakes on earth. It shrank over decades as water from the rivers feeding it was diverted to grow cotton. A T-shirt is a small thing. The system behind it is not.

For scale, estimates for a pair of jeans vary sharply with production conditions: around 3,000 to 4,000 litres on average, with the least-efficient processes exceeding 10,000 litres. Multiply that across a wardrobe, then across a planet, and you get why UNEP estimates that the textile value chain consumes about 215 trillion litres of water each year.

Why recycling doesn’t quite close the gap

This is where a comforting thought usually arrives. You donate your old shirts, you drop them in the textile bank, so surely the water isn’t really lost.

I understand the appeal of that but it just doesn’t survive contact with what actually happens to old clothes.

Reusing and recycling are not the same thing, and the difference matters here. Plenty of clothing gets passed on and worn again, which is genuinely good. But turning an old shirt back into new fabric almost never happens. The Ellen MacArthur Foundation says less than 1 percent of old clothing becomes new clothing. The rest is mostly loss.

Research estimates that about 12 percent is recycled into lower-value uses, while 73 percent of the materials entering the clothing system are landfilled or burned after use.

So the 2,700-litre water footprint of a shirt is an impact already incurred by the time the shirt exists. Donating it is a kind thing to do with the garment, but it does not refund the water.

What the number is actually asking of us

I don’t think the point of the 2,700-litre figure is to make you feel guilty in front of your wardrobe. Guilt is a poor motivator and an even poorer way to keep score. The number is more useful as a lens, a way of seeing a cost the price tag was never designed to show you.

The people who study this tend to argue the fix is structural, not individual. Kirsi Niinimäki, an associate professor at Aalto University and co-author of a peer-reviewed review of fast fashion’s environmental cost, put it plainly to phys.org: “Slow fashion is the future, but we need a new system-wide understanding of how to transition towards this model.” Her point, as I read it, is that no amount of careful donating rescues a system built to sell more and last less.

What the shirt in your drawer offers is not a scolding but a habit of attention. Once you can see the water in a T-shirt, you start to notice the hidden bill behind a lot of ordinary things, the cost that never makes it onto the receipt. Wearing what you already own for longer is one honest response. But mostly the number just asks you to stop pretending these things are cheap. They were never cheap. The bill simply went somewhere else.
